What is hemmorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, is a common rectal condition characterized by swelling and tension in the blood vessels in the rectal and anal area. Hemorrhoids. can occur internally within the anal canal or externally around the anus. There can be several causes of hemorrhoids, including excessive straining during bowel movements or increased pressure on the anal veins during pregnancy.
What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids?
If you have hemorrhoids, you may experience the following symptoms:
1. Painful bowel movements that can cause irritation to the rectum or anus.
2. Bleeding during bowel movements.
3. A discharge of mucus-like fluid from the anus.
4. The presence of a painful swelling, lump, or mass near the anus.
5. Itching in the anal area, which can be continuous or intermittent.
Why do hemorrhoids (piles) occur?
Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, develop due to increased pressure on the blood vessels in and around the rectal area. This pressure causes them to swell or become enlarged. Hemorrhoids primarily occur in the veins of the rectum and anal canal, a condition known as *varicose veins of the anus.
Hemorrhoids can develop for several reasons, including:
1. Exerting excessive force during bowel movements.
2. Prolonged episodes of diarrhea or constipation.
3. Spending extended periods of time sitting on the toilet.
All of the above factors contribute to increased pressure on the anal veins, leading to the enlargement of blood vessels and the development of hemorrhoids.
From an Ayurvedic perspective- hemorrhoids are referred to as "arsha." The term "arsha" translates to "pain like that of a needle." Hemorrhoids are considered a digestive disorder that results from the accumulation of faeces in the anal passage. Constipation and pregnancy can also contribute to the development of hemorrhoids. According to Ayurveda, an imbalance in the three doshas, along with factors such as irregular or inappropriate diet and lifestyle choices, as well as genetic factors, can lead to an imbalance in the tridoshas and the development of hemorrhoids.
